Many of us grew up with Vick’s VapoRub as a cold treatment. The menthol and eucalyptus was so soothing. I decided to try making my own non-toxic version of this and I have been pleased with the results. There are many recipes for this DIY rub but I have settled on this recipe. I’ve highlighted oils from the starter kit that can be used but I recommend using the eucalyptus and wintergreen to get the best aroma…
Ingredients to make 6 small metal canisters of vapor rub:
- 2 Tbsp organic beeswax pellets
- 1/2 cup organic coconut oil
- 20 drops YL eucalyptus radiata and 5-10 drops eucalyptus globulus oil or YL R.C. oil
- 20 drops YL wintergreen or peppermint oil
- 20 drops YL lavender oil
- 15 drops YL lemon oil
- 15 drops YL tea tree oil or YL Thieves oil
Start by measuring beeswax pellets into a small container such as a pyrex measuring cup and melt the wax by placing the measuring cup into a pan of simmering water. I find it helpful to hook the handle of the glass cup onto the side of the saucepan to prevent it from tipping. Stir occasionally until all the wax is melted. Then add the coconut oil and stir it until it melts. This may take up to 15 min or more depending on how hot the water is.
Remove the glass from the pan and let it cool for 3-5 min before adding the essential oils and stirring.
Have your jars or tins available and pour in the mixture to fill the containers to 90% fullness. Let them cool for 30 min before capping them to avoid condensation.
This should make about 6 (2oz) containers. Enough for you, your family and your friends! I like to label the canisters and place them in small organza bags to share… If you don’t get a cold this winter, try using it for chapped lips or other dry skin issues!
